Chillin' at W's
Nov. 2nd, 2012 02:36 pmOn Monday, I voluntarily evacuated myself and our cats ahead of Hurricane Sandy.
Hobbes woke me up at 10:30am, looking incredibly worried. As he is usually Mr Cool, this rattled me. I looked outside and saw the water was making its way steadily up the yard. I estimated it was within hours of covering the driveway and cutting off my only escape route.
As I left around noon, I noticed that the water on my street was almost up to the edges of the road.
I later learned that high tide was at 3:30pm.
We stayed at W's for three days (bless her!) and got to hang out in relative safety. Maggie and Hobbes weren't too pleased at having to share quarters with W's elderly cat, but no fights broke out.
Maggie ended up claiming one chair as "hers".

Hobbes, tired of my late-night internet surfing, fell asleep next to my keyboard every night.

We finally got to go home last night and it’s a bizarre feeling – the landscape is subtly different. All the colours are muted, dusty. The whole yard smells faintly of saltwater. There’s debris everywhere – downed trees, branches…things have floated in from everywhere. Bits of cornstalks all over the yard. I can tell the direction the water flowed through the grass near the steps when the tide receded. It looks like the yard got about a foot of water. A few larger things floated away, but odd little things stayed...
And our semi-feral outdoor cat is okay.
She showed up at 2am yesterday, hungry, but otherwise well. :)
Foods, Felines, and Froggle-toes
Aug. 3rd, 2012 01:14 pmRecently, I've been reading about Bryndzové Halušky, a Slovakian national dish. I figured that any recipe consisting entirely of potatoes, cheese, and bacon could not possibly be a bad thing.
It's quite salty, but absolutely delicious.

Hobbes was very curious about it, but stopped short of taking a bite.
He looked at me as if to say, "Mama, you know I'm not supposed to eat bacon..."
I've been in such a cheesy mood lately.
One day, all I could think about was crackers with Brie spread. YUM!

Things have been going along quietly at home.
Our cats are as naughty as ever.
Three-year-old Maggie sleeps a lot during the day but charms us with her chirps and trills. 21-month-old Hobbes is still a live wire. He leaps off furniture and stalks food with a passion. But his early-morning snuggle sessions are delightful. Both cats enjoy sunrises and watching the birds every morning.

They've also discovered the tree frogs that frequent out sitting room window. The frogs (and hummingbird) often look in the windows to see what we're doing.

Day 23 (30 posts about anything at all)
Feb. 21st, 2012 10:05 amLife was quiet this weekend.
We got some snow on Monday morning, so I stayed in bed, working on my needlepoint. The sunlight helped tell the difference between two colours of cream on the pattern.
Hobbes insisted that he was being neglected.

Both cats were surprised to see the snow outside.

Spring is around the corner, however.
The first hellebore has finally started to bloom.

Day 19 (30 posts about anything at all)
Feb. 13th, 2012 11:37 amWe had a very quiet, uneventful weekend.
The weather was cold and we got a little snow (which melted by the end of the day). I think Mother Nature delivers these little dustings to remind us that there is beauty even in the dead of winter.

I holed up in my room and worked on my needlepoint (while under the blankets!). Hobbes joined me quite a bit of the time; two chilled creatures sharing the warmth and watching the wind outside.

By Sunday evening, I had finished the background of the piece, after four weeks of stitching.
I'm a bit in love with this design.
Stormy and I have been giggling like 8-year-olds for the past few days. I've been stitching the background from right to left ('cause my brain is wired strangely) and when telling him where I was in stitching the design, I'd say "Unicorn bum!" in a silly Potter Puppet Pals voice. It's helped me keep my sense of humour when the intricacy of the pattern was getting to me.

Last night, I filled in the last four flowers and completed the thin blue border around the piece. It's looking much more "finished", even in this state of completion. Next stop: spotted unicorn!

Day 12 (30 posts about anything at all)
Jan. 4th, 2012 12:00 pmHappy New Year, all.
I've been busy the past week or so.
stormsongk and I have been trying to clean up the house and be more organised. I've been attempting to clean for a minimum of 15 minutes a day. So far, we've cleared off nearly half of the kitchen table, our Hoosier cabinet, and much of the kitchen counter.
On Monday, I finished rearranging the dinnerware. I'm pretty proud of myself. What's the point of owning all that gorgeous pottery if it's not in a place where it can be used every day?

Also, I've been sharing the seedlings from our lettuce plants that bolted over the summer. They're everywhere in our back garden, so I waited until they got large enough to transplant and then shared them with family. Salads for all!

While I was home on Monday, I noticed that Maggie and Hobbes have begun snoozing only a few feet apart in the afternoon sunbeams. Pretty much the only time these two spend time together is at sunrise (they love to sit in the window) or during games of chase-and-pounce.
I ran for the camera at this sweet sight.

Day 10 (30 posts about anything at all)
Dec. 27th, 2011 09:53 amOne of my favourite Christmas presents was from my 8-year-old niece, who drew a picture of my cat Hobbes.

I've spent this week watching BBC's 2010 series of Sherlock and then on Saturday
stormsongk and I watched Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Whee! Can't wait for Sherlock series 2 to air on New Years Day.

Day 9 (30 posts about anything at all)
Dec. 25th, 2011 12:24 pmHappy holidays, all.
I finally finished the major stitching on my Yule wreath pattern Friday night.
All that's left is a load of backstitching to outline the leaves and berries.

I'll be heading to my in-laws' house in a little while to pass out gifts to our nieces. Then probably relax for the rest of the afternoon.

Day 7 (30 posts about anything at all)
Dec. 20th, 2011 09:50 amThis weekend was the Yule feast with our chosen family.
A bunch of us and a load of food crammed into my sister's tiny 1-bedroom apartment.
Crowded and sometimes loud, but fun.
During the weekend, I started a new cross stitch pattern (yay Etsy!) - a wreath of holly, ivy, and mistletoe. On Sunday morning, I had some trouble sleeping, so I got up and started stitching.
Hobbes curled up next to me and purred for three hours.

Day 6 (30 posts about anything at all)
Dec. 15th, 2011 02:54 pmTomorrow, I'm going to begin a new crafting project: a small cross-stitched wreath.
Went out today to look for red floss for stitching the holly berries.
Very amused to discover that the perfect red colour is numbered 666.

Also surprised to find white glow-in-the-dark embroidery floss.
Must find a use for this...
We're preparing for the Yule feast on Saturday.
Haven't bought nearly enough apples, potatoes, or cheese...
But
enemyfrigate's present is done.
stormsongk's present is wrapped and hidden so he can't peek at it.
My sister W graduates from university tomorrow.
We're all so proud of her for going back to school in her 40s and graduating on-time despite recovering from back surgery.
Bravo, sis! We love you.

Day 2 (30 posts about anything at all)
Dec. 5th, 2011 11:51 amBetween lack of internet at home and general busy-ness, I've been neglecing this meme. The weekend was a quiet one.
Spent quite a bit of time watching DVDs on my laptop, playing with the cats, and mowing the yard.
Bought my sweetie a dozen roses for $2.
And I finally transplanted some of our self-seeded baby lettuces into a planter by the door so
stormsongk can remember to pick them when he makes sandwiches. :)

Life Imitating Art
Feb. 6th, 2011 11:00 amIt's come to my attention that since
stormsongk and I have adopted our cats, life has begun to imitate art. About 20 years ago, I bought an art tile that looks a great deal like three-month-old Hobbes.

And the reason I bought it is that it looked like my best concept of what I wanted "home" to be.
