Writer's Block: Collect 'em all

Oh, I've collected all sorts of things.
As a child, I collected stamps and seashells.
They were small, free, and could be put away in boxes to keep my room tidy.
As a young twenty-something with a job, I collected antique printings of my favourite poetry books. A high school literature teacher had turned me on to some of the writers and I discovered others on my own. I also collected art prints - Thomas Canty, Michael Whelan, and Robert Gould, mostly. Gorgeous fantastical images.
In my thirties, I collected music CDs and television series on DVD.
Now, in my early forties, I've realised how damned much STUFF I own and am cutting back. I'm giving outdated things to Goodwill or chucking them in the bin. I still have a sizeable book collection. I've begun acquiring copies of books I read and loved as a child. (My family couldn't afford to buy books, so everything came from the library. I always wished I could go back and read those books again...) I still have the prints, music, and DVDs. But I have become much more selective about what I buy.
I have binned the stamp collection and put the seashells in a safe place.
I still enjoy them.
Recently, I have begun collecting heart-shaped objects - rocks, wood, shells - worn into the familar shapes by wind and water. I love their colours and textures. And I treasure the quiet days spent finding them - out in nature - walking along the ocean or swimming in mountain streams.

Writer's Block: Gadget Conundrum

I would absolutely bring my camera.
My current favourite vacation spot prohibits the use of radios and such and does not receive mobile or wi-fi signals. It's bliss.
My camera is like an extension of myself.
Together, we can capture sweeping vistas or the smallest flower on a mountainside.
After the vacation, I'd go straight to my computer and load all the pictures of my wonderful vacation.

Writer's Block: All-Nighter

My last all-nighter was about 15 years ago at a science fiction convention. We sang at the filk circle until the wee hours. The bagpipers and drummers went to wake up the rest of the hotel around 5am. Then someone pulled the fire alarm and the bottom two floors of the hotel were evacuated.
It was quite cold outside in the pre-dawn air. I remember that my sister's boyfriend at the time was wearing little more than chainmail and cuddled up (innocently) to anyone in a woollen cloak.

Writer's Block: AKA
Feb. 27th, 2009 10:11 am[Error: unknown template qotd]My username is from a phrase that caught my ear in the beautiful song "Caledonia" by Scottish musician Dougie MacLean. It's about being homesick for your native land. I am forever wanting to disappear into the wild, green places where I feel most at home.
Now I'm sitting here before the fire,
The empty room, the forest choir
The flames that couldn't get any higher
They've withered, now they've gone
But I'm steady thinking, my way is clear
And I know what I will do tomorrow
When the hands have shaken and the kisses flow
Oh I will disappear
Now I'm sitting here before the fire,
The empty room, the forest choir
The flames that couldn't get any higher
They've withered, now they've gone
But I'm steady thinking, my way is clear
And I know what I will do tomorrow
When the hands have shaken and the kisses flow
Oh I will disappear
