I've been working steadily of the Needlepoint Pattern of Doom (a.k.a. Candace Bahouth's Medieval Unicorn).  Several hours a night.
Once I got my head around the design, it's been easy.

At the moment, I'm filling in the ground-colour and find I'm rather in love with the white tracery where the leaves and branches will go.
I will be quite sad when I have to fill them in with colour.

You don't have to fill the leaves and flowers in. This is YOUR project. You control the pattern. The pattern does not control you.

I know.
I do think the bare canvas might be too bright for the finished design (there is no "white" in the pattern anywhere)...the leaves might upstage everything.

I'll decide later.
For now, I'm just enjoying every leaf that emerges from this little picture. :)

You could always fill the leaves and flowers in with a cream color...or an even paler green.

I may do that if I decide to re-visit this design.
For now, I'm fairly content stitching according to pattern. It's teaching me loads about the way colours complement each other.

If I ever stich this design with cream-coloured leaves, I'll also change the colours of the flowers and border.
