Last night, as I was driving back from the store, I spotted a bright splash of purple off the side of the road.

Irises.

Ones I don't have.

I dropped my stuff off at the house, then doubled back.  There was nowhere to pull off the road, so I had to walk about 10 minutes each way to get to them (with a bag and trowel in my pocketses).
One small root came home with me.

I also found a pretty new place for a photograph, but I'll need to bring my tripod (and possibly someone to drive the getaway vehicle).  The friend I went out with on Sunday also said he knows of more pretty places near my house if I'm ever bored on a Sunday.  :D

In my garden at home, methinks the monster walking onion was been taking notes from the Triffids...
I think it'll soon be stealing souls by moonlight.

The roses are pretty, too.
"Rush Gallica" and 'Variegata di Bologna'

This evening, I finished assembling the 3'x6' raised planting bed and filled it halfway with soil.  I'll fill it up the rest of the way when I get a sunny day.

I'm kinda jealous about the irises, I miss having them around. There was one off the side of the road on the way to my parents place but they mow it now so it's probably gone but it was the most amazing florescent purple I've ever seen. And when I say florescent.. I mean florescent. I wanted to find it so badly, but it's likely all dead now that they actually take care of that ditch. Hopefully someone dug it up and it's blooming somewhere else. (Mmm.. Triffids..)

I rescue all sorts of plants: roses, iris, yuccas...you name it. If it'll grow, it's mine.
My favourite rescue was my Banshee roses (a variety dating from the 1770s). They were growing around an old farmhouse. Two weeks after I took some divisions, the house was burned and the lot bulldozed.

If you love irises, I have divisions to spare...

I would just have no place to put them, I rent and move like once a year. But my parents have my Superstition irises on their farm in MO.. so it's not a total loss on my part.
